I don’t remember exactly when I became a DIY enthusiast, but it’s something that happened recently && practically overnight. I’ve always been an extremely clumsy person, and growing up I always thought of ’the arts’ in general as being something for more nimble-minded people. My mother was only vaguely interested in learning any sort of domestic craft (she did make some beautiful quilts under the watchful eye of my memal) and used to wring her hands over the elaborate costumes my sister and I expected her to make us for ballet recitals. I always thought I’d follow in her footsteps and buy my way to visual stimulation.
In highschool, the so-called ‘creative-class’ (which included many people in the circle in which i settled) did everything they could to imply that arts of music and concrete medium were something for the few, and the supremely ‘talented’. Those people were full themselves (and probably shit), and none of them were the ‘visionaries’ they thought themselves. ’Artsy’ people derive from lives of ‘artsy’ exposure. Making something with your hands && making it well is something that everyone can do with proper instruction.
Here’s some fun and simple DIY projects via Design Sponge, most of which you can do in a spare moment. If you’re a knitter, there’s a lot more fun projects that you can find at the end of this blurb.

I’ve featured fabric-covered buttons on my tumblr before, but it’s such a cute idea, I had to share again.

I’m sure you can understand from the picture why this is one of design sponge’s more controversial DIY, but this idea is too awesome not to share. Don’t people have better things to worry about than split infinitives anyway?

Cute Birds && Mobile Ideas? YES
http://www.designspongeonline.com/2008/07/diy-idea-bird-mobile.html

In middle school, my friend Sarah Moore gave me a fork ‘picture frame’ for Christmas. It’s a totally cute and thrifty idea. All you need is some old cutlery and some pliers. Here’s an idea that is based on the same concept.
